What does SEO cost in 2026? We have broken down the current SEO prices and agency costs: a guide to search engine optimisation and budget

What does SEO cost? The honest answer: somewhere between 500 euros a month for a small website with little competition and several thousand euros a month if you need a steady stream of new content and want to rank in a crowded niche. Everything that agencies, freelancers and subscriptions offer sits somewhere in between. In this article we break down SEO costs for 2026: hourly rates by type of work, monthly retainers, what freelancers charge, which factors push the price up, and how to estimate your own SEO budget.
How do we know? With the leading marketing subscription in the German speaking market, we have looked after more than 100 brands in Austria, Germany and Switzerland since 2021, many of them with SEO as their core channel. This article has ranked for questions about SEO costs for years, and we have reworked it with our current figures.
SEO costs in 2026 at a glance
| Model | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly rate, content | 80 to 180 euros per hour | copy, articles, landing pages |
| Hourly rate, technical SEO | 150 to 250 euros per hour | structure, load time, indexing |
| Hourly rate, development and optimisation | 200 to 300 euros per hour | rebuilds on your website or shop |
| SEO freelancer | 90 to 150 euros per hour | single tasks, smaller websites |
| One off SEO audit | 500 to 3,000 euros | analysis with a list of actions |
| Ongoing support, basic | from 1,000 euros a month | foundational optimisation, little content |
| Ongoing support, solid | 1,500 to 3,000 euros a month | technical work, content and reporting |
| Crowded niche, lots of content | several thousand euros a month | a steady stream of new content plus optimisation |
| SEO in the Einfachmarketing marketing subscription | from 1,490 euros a month | SEO plus every other channel, tools and reporting included |
All figures are benchmarks for the German speaking market as of 2026. Specialist agencies and large consultancies charge more. Providers under 500 euros a month usually deliver a tool generated report rather than genuine support.
What SEO costs for your website
Want a rough number for your own site? Work with the hourly rates above and the typical effort for your website size, level of competition and content need. A mid sized website in a market with average competition, two new pieces of content a month and a national target market lands roughly here.
| Route | Per month |
|---|---|
| Traditional agency | 1,500 to 2,500 euros |
| Freelancer | 1,000 to 1,700 euros |
| Marketing subscription, SEO plus every channel | from 1,490 euros |
These are benchmarks based on the 2026 hourly rates: technical SEO 150 to 250 euros, content 80 to 180 euros, freelancers 90 to 150 euros. Media spend for Google Ads is not included. The result is a range, not a quote. If you would rather have the sum done for you, our pricing page lets you build a team and see the cost straight away.
What does SEO cost per hour? Hourly rates by type of work
SEO is not one service but a bundle of technical work, content and analysis, which is why agencies quote different rates for different tasks. Technical SEO, meaning site structure, load time, indexing and internal linking, costs 150 to 250 euros an hour because it needs developer level knowledge. Content, meaning articles, landing pages and product copy, sits at 80 to 180 euros an hour depending on whether a copywriter or a specialist editorial team writes it. Rebuilds on a website or shop, new templates or a migration for example, cost 200 to 300 euros an hour. Freelancers usually charge 90 to 150 euros an hour.
What matters more than the hourly rate is what comes out at the end. Ten hours of technical SEO on a site that already has solid foundations achieves very little; ten hours of content in a niche with no competition can bring in enquiries for a year. That is why we do not work from timesheets in the subscription, but from a task list prioritised by impact.
What does SEO cost per month? Three price levels
Most businesses do not need hours, they need someone looking after the site month after month. In practice that comes in three levels.
- Basic support from 1,000 euros a month: monitoring, smaller technical fixes, optimisation of existing pages. Enough for a small website in a quiet niche, but it rarely produces growth.
- Solid support for 1,500 to 3,000 euros a month: technical work, two to four new pieces of content a month, internal linking, reporting on rankings and enquiries. This is the level at which SEO becomes measurable for most small and medium sized businesses.
- Crowded niche with heavy content needs, several thousand euros a month: anyone going up against portals, comparison sites and big brands needs new content regularly, digital PR and continuous optimisation. Here the quality of the strategy decides the outcome, not the number of hours.
In the Einfachmarketing marketing subscription, SEO is included from 1,490 euros a month alongside every other channel, more than 100 tools and reporting. The difference to an agency: your dedicated marketing manager decides with you each month whether SEO, ads or social media is the bigger lever right now, instead of working through a block of hours.
SEO agency, SEO freelancer or subscription?
| Criterion | SEO agency | SEO freelancer | Marketing subscription |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | 150 to 300 euros per hour, or a retainer from 1,000 euros a month | 90 to 150 euros per hour, or a monthly package | from 1,490 euros a month, every channel included |
| Team | specialists for technical work, content and links | one person, usually with one strength | marketing manager plus specialists |
| Tools | usually extra or inside the retainer | own tools, often limited | more than 100 tools included |
| Flexibility | contracts of 6 to 12 months are the norm | flexible, but capacity is limited | cancellable monthly |
| Best for | large websites, shops, crowded niches | small websites, single tasks | SMEs and startups that need more than SEO |
You can spot a good SEO freelancer by their expertise and track record, by individual rather than off the shelf solutions, by transparent communication with regular reporting, and by the fact that they use modern tools for keyword research, technical analysis and monitoring. The upsides compared with an agency are flexibility and a personal relationship; the downsides are limited capacity and dependence on one person. If you want both, a fixed point of contact and a full team, you end up at the subscription.
Six factors that determine SEO costs
- Size of the website: a site with 300 subpages needs more analysis, more optimisation and more upkeep than one with ten pages.
- Technical condition: load time, structure, indexing, mobile rendering. Clean foundations save months.
- Competition: in crowded sectors such as law, finance, property or e commerce, every position costs more work.
- Target area: local visibility in one city is cheaper than national or international rankings.
- Content need: new content is the largest ongoing line item. Two articles a month cost very differently from eight.
- Keyword selection: search terms tied to revenue with a realistic chance of ranking are worth more than high search volume without buying intent. The research takes time, but it saves budget.
What does an SEO audit cost?
A one off SEO audit, meaning an analysis of technical setup, content, keywords and competitors with a list of actions, costs 500 to 3,000 euros depending on the size of the website. It makes sense as a starting point, but it is no substitute for ongoing work: somebody still has to work through the list. In the marketing subscription, the analysis is part of the needs assessment at the start, at no extra cost.
Is SEO worth it despite the cost?
Yes, if people actively search for what you offer and you want to win customers online. SEO is the only marketing activity whose results stay with you when you stop paying: an article that reaches page one keeps bringing in enquiries for months or years without a cost per click. The price for that is patience. You often see the first improvements within a few weeks, but stable rankings and a noticeable rise in enquiries usually take three to six months depending on your starting point, the competition and your budget. If you need results faster, combine SEO with Google Ads.
SEO or Google Ads: which is cheaper?
Google Ads buys visibility immediately but charges per click, in the German speaking market roughly 0.50 to 3 euros in search depending on the sector, and considerably more in crowded B2B niches. SEO costs work up front and then delivers clicks with no ongoing media spend. Over twelve months, SEO is cheaper per enquiry for most SMEs, while ads are easier to plan. The best strategy is usually both: ads for the keywords that sell immediately, SEO for the topics that carry you long term.
The right SEO budget for your business
As a rule of thumb: if you want to be found consistently, plan for at least 1,000 to 1,500 euros a month, and in crowded niches with heavy content needs 3,000 euros and up. Work the budget backwards: what is an enquiry worth to you, how many do you need each month, and which keywords bring them in? That tells you how much SEO is worth to you. It is exactly the sum we do with you in the first date, free and with no obligation. You can see what a team costs on our pricing page, or read how Marketing as a Service works.
